About Hanlith

Hanlith emerges from the limestone bedrock as a collection of stone dwellings gathered against the quiet severity of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It lies 5.3 miles east-south-east of Settle (from Settle: bearing 105°T, OS grid SD 901 613), and is situated east-north-east of Kirkby Malham village. The River Aire flows past the northern edge of the land, its water clear and cold as it traces a path through the valley floor. To the west, the slopes of Badger Hill rise sharply, casting long, lean shadows across the pastures when the afternoon sun begins to wane. The air here holds a particular sharpness, scrubbed clean by the winds that travel over the high crags. A sense of permanence defines Hanlith, where the grey walls of the houses seem to have grown from the earth rather than been placed upon it. Walking the tracks toward the nearby heights, one finds a landscape stripped of artifice, defined only by the hard economy of stone and sky. Hanlith remains a place where the silence is heavy, broken only by the rhythmic water of the beck or the sudden, sharp cry of a bird circling the hills.
