About Hesley

Hesley occupies a rugged, quiet fold of land in North Yorkshire, where the horizon is defined by the shifting moods of the limestone fells. It lies 3.3 miles south-west of Settle (from Settle: bearing 223°T, OS grid SD 783 596), and is situated west of Rathmell village. The land here holds the damp chill of the north, with Hesley Beck tracing a narrow, silver seam through the fields just to the east. High above the hamlet, the rough limestone prow of Scoutber Crag juts into the sky, catching the sharp, pale light that characterises this corner of the Pennines. To the north, the eleven hectares of Hesley Moss SSSI create a dark, saturated expanse of peat and sedge that refuses to be tamed by the plough. There is a peculiar, watchful stillness in the way the shadows stretch across the pastures at dusk, as if the earth itself were holding its breath against the coming frost. Hesley remains a place of sparse, functional beauty, defined by the resilient stone walls that compartmentalise the wind-swept slopes. Life in Hesley follows the slow, necessary patterns of the agricultural cycle, indifferent to the hurried pace of the world beyond the hills.
