To the north, the weathered grey masonry of the Markenfield Hall Moated Medieval Fortified House stands as a phantom of feudal strength, its reflection held captive in the still waters of its surrounding moat. Ingerthorpe experiences the shifting light of the North Yorkshire sky, which turns from a bruised, heavy violet at dusk to a pale, translucent gold upon the frost-touched hedgerows. The land here holds the memory of medieval agricultural life, with the traces of long-vanished dwellings lingering beneath the grass like half-remembered dreams.
