Marske reveals itself as a collection of sturdy stone dwellings gathered where the high, windswept moors begin to yield to the quieter, sheltered folds of the Swaledale landscape. It lies 4.1 miles west of Richmond (from Richmond: bearing 267°T, OS grid NZ 105 005), and is situated west of Hudswell village. The local topography is defined by deep, limestone-carved ravines, and Marske itself sits comfortably within the protected expanse of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A short walk to the west brings one to the ancient Packhorse Bridge, a slender arch of masonry that has watched the waters of the beck flow beneath its span for centuries.
