About Middlesmoor

Middlesmoor commands a high, austere ridge where the sky seems to press closer to the earth than it does in the sheltered valleys below. It lies 6.7 miles north-west of Pateley Bridge (from Pateley Bridge: bearing 322°T, OS grid SE 092 741), and is situated north-west of Lofthouse village. The stone houses of Middlesmoor gather around the church like sheep seeking shelter from the biting winds that scour the heights of Upper Nidderdale. Below these dwellings, the chasm of How Stean gorge cuts a jagged, limestone wound into the landscape, its dark waters rushing with a cold, relentless purpose. Ancient remnants of the Settlement Site At Middlesmoor linger in the turf, where the ghosts of former inhabitants are held in the silence of the high moors. Light here has a peculiar, translucent quality, catching the grey slate roofs and turning them into shards of silver against the bruised purple of the surrounding hills. Farmers still work the harsh, unyielding soil, their lives dictated by the turning seasons and the sudden, violent shifts in weather that define this exposed country. Middlesmoor remains a place of hard edges and wide horizons, where the land refuses to be tamed by the small ambitions of men.
