About Port Mulgrave

Port Mulgrave overlooks the restless churn of the North Sea from the rugged edge of the Cleveland coast. It lies 4.5 miles east of Loftus (from Loftus: bearing 97°T, OS grid NZ 794 174), and is situated north of Hinderwell village. Ironstone once dictated the rhythm of life here, leaving behind an industrial ghostliness that has since been reclaimed by the salt-heavy winds. To the north, the ancient earthworks atop Beacon Hill hold a silent vigil, their contours softened by centuries of exposure to the elements. The strata of the nearby Staithes - Port Mulgrave SSSI reveal a deep, geological memory, baring fossil-rich layers that crumble under the relentless assault of the tides. Below the cliffs, the remnants of the old harbour works lean into the surf, blackened and brittle like timber salvaged from a wreck. High above the shoreline, the ascent toward Chapel Hill offers a vantage point where the sky seems to expand, swallowing the horizon in a vast, grey-blue embrace. Port Mulgrave remains a place where the land yields slowly to the water, a stark intersection of broken stone and brine.
