Runswick Bay breathes the salty tang of the North Sea, a curve of golden sand cradled by dramatic cliffs. It lies 8.5 km east-south-east of Loftus (from Loftus: bearing 105°T, OS grid NZ 805 161), and is situated east-south-east of Hinderwell village. The cottages of Runswick Bay tumble down the hillside towards the shore, their red pantile roofs a warm counterpoint to the cool grey of the sea mist that often drifts in from the water. Once a bustling fishing village, the echoes of its past can still be felt in the narrow, winding lanes and the weathered stone of the harbour walls. The light here, particularly in the late afternoon, can cast a luminous glow on the sea, transforming the ordinary into something quite extraordinary. The very air seems to hum with the memory of hardy fishermen and the rhythmic pull of the tides.
