Smallways emerges from the rolling North Yorkshire landscape as a quiet collection of dwellings defined by the steady, unpretentious pace of the surrounding farmland. It lies 5.1 miles south-east of Barnard Castle (from Barnard Castle: bearing 136°T, OS grid NZ 112 111), and is situated north-north-east of Newsham village. The terrain here holds a particular clarity, where the morning light catches the limestone walls and softens the hard edges of the local stone. A short distance to the southwest, the waters of Dyson Beck carve a modest path through the fields, providing a constant, low murmur that accompanies the passage of the seasons. To the north, Smallways Beck meanders with a similar persistence, binding the immediate geography together through its rhythmic flow. Beyond these watercourses, the land rises toward the distinct silhouettes of Whinny Hill and Shorn Hill, which serve as silent sentinels over the grazing livestock.
