Staithes tumbles down a steep ravine to the sea, a jumble of red-roofed cottages clinging to the hillside. It lies 6.0 km east of Loftus (from Loftus: bearing 85°T, OS grid NZ 781 187), and is situated south-east of Cowbar village. The air here carries the sharp tang of salt, mingling with the earthy scent of seaweed revealed by the retreating tide, and the light, even on a grey day, has a pearlescent quality that softens the rugged outlines of the harbour. For centuries, Staithes has been a haven for fishermen, their colourful boats bobbing in the sheltered bay, a livelihood etched into the very character of the place. The cobbled lanes wind and dip, revealing unexpected vistas of the North Sea, a constant, powerful presence. Even the silence here is different, punctuated by the cries of gulls and the distant murmur of the waves.
