Starbotton rests within the sweeping embrace of Wharfedale, a place where the sky feels vast and the stone walls have a certain stoic dignity. It lies 17.4 km north-east of Settle (from Settle: bearing 50°T, OS grid SD 953 747), and is situated south-south-east of Buckden village. The River Wharfe, a ribbon of cool, clear water, charts its course through the valley, its murmur a constant companion to the scattered farmsteads. The air here carries the clean scent of damp earth and the faint, sweet perfume of wild thyme that clings to the verges. Starbotton’s cottages, built from the local grey stone, seem to grow organically from the landscape, their roofs softened by the passage of seasons. Even on a grey day, a particular quality of light often catches the upper reaches of the fells, lending them a pale, ethereal glow.
