About Thorgill

Thorgill emerges from the rugged moorland fringe like a scattering of stone pulled from the earth itself. It lies 6.2 miles north of Kirkbymoorside (from Kirkbymoorside: bearing 8°T, OS grid SE 708 964), and is situated west-north-west of Rosedale Abbey village. The sky here holds a vast, pale clarity, casting long shadows across the heather that seem to pull the very colour from the gritstone walls. Within the protective boundaries of the North York Moors National Park, the landscape feels ancient and unyielding, shaped by the persistent, cold breath of the high plateau. To the east, the waters of Thor Gill carve a sharp, rhythmic seam through the rock, their constant movement providing a low, percussive pulse to the silence. A short distance to the west, the grass grows over the earthwork of a prehistoric barrow, a silent keeper of ghosts watching over the grazing sheep. Thorgill remains a place where the wind carries the scent of damp peat and the sharp tang of coming rain, reminding any visitor that the wild remains close at hand.
