About Walden

Walden claims a secluded corner of the North Yorkshire uplands, where the air possesses a sharp, clean clarity that seems to sharpen the edges of the surrounding limestone walls. It lies 8.0 miles west-south-west of Leyburn (from Leyburn: bearing 237°T, OS grid SE 005 833), and is situated south-south-east of Newbiggin village. Protected by the expansive boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Walden maintains a quiet dignity governed more by the turning of the seasons than the clamour of modern life. To the north-north-west, the slopes of How Hill rise with a heavy, muted presence, casting long shadows that crawl across the fields as the afternoon sun begins its slow descent. Much of the ground here is defined by the Walden Meadows SSSI, a sanctuary of diverse flora where the damp earth supports a delicate, intricate cycle of growth. The light in this part of the Dales has a pale, ethereal quality, catching the limestone outcrops and turning the grey stone into something resembling tarnished silver. Walden persists as a place of low horizons and vast, open skies, where the wind carries the faint, persistent scent of upland grass and rain.
