Cote rests upon the flat, alluvial plains of West Oxfordshire, where the horizon stretches wide and indifferent under an expansive, heavy sky. It lies 4.5 miles south of Witney (from Witney: bearing 183°T, OS grid SP 353 025), and is situated east-south-east of Aston village. The low-lying fields surrounding Cote hold a particular stillness, a quietude that seems to rise from the damp earth itself. To the south, the sluggish waters of the Great Brook and Cote Ditch trace thin, silver veins through the pasture, feeding the land with a persistent, cold moisture. Beyond these watercourses, the biodiversity of the Chimney Meadows SSSI thrives in the damp, undisturbed silence of the floodplain. Ancient, hidden markers of human history remain in the nearby earth, where the soil holds the faint, geometric ghosts of long-vanished enclosures. The light here has a peculiar, translucent quality, catching the edges of the reeds and the weathered stone of local buildings with a sharp, pale clarity. Cote remains a place defined by its intimate relationship with the water and the slow, deliberate turning of the agricultural seasons.
