Much of the land here forms part of the Aston Rowant Woods Sssi, a protected domain where beech trees cast long, skeletal shadows across the leaf mould during the shorter days of winter. A short distance away, the Chinnor Chalk Pit Sssi reveals the pale, ancient geology of the region, its jagged white scars standing in stark contrast to the surrounding greenery. Crowell remains defined by these high, limestone ridges that hold the weather at bay and channel the winds across the low-lying fields. The light in this corner of the county often possesses a singular, thin clarity, sharpening the edges of the flint-walled cottages and the ancient, weathered stone of the local church.
