About Crowell

Crowell keeps a quiet vigil at the base of the Chiltern escarpment, where the chalky earth meets the verdant expanse of the Oxfordshire plain. It lies 4.6 miles south-south-east of Thame (from Thame: bearing 149°T, OS grid SU 744 997), and is situated east-north-east of Kingston Blount village. The local terrain climbs sharply toward the east, where the slopes of Crowell Hill rise to meet the wide, unpredictable sky. Much of the land here forms part of the Aston Rowant Woods Sssi, a protected domain where beech trees cast long, skeletal shadows across the leaf mould during the shorter days of winter. A short distance away, the Chinnor Chalk Pit Sssi reveals the pale, ancient geology of the region, its jagged white scars standing in stark contrast to the surrounding greenery. Crowell remains defined by these high, limestone ridges that hold the weather at bay and channel the winds across the low-lying fields. The light in this corner of the county often possesses a singular, thin clarity, sharpening the edges of the flint-walled cottages and the ancient, weathered stone of the local church. Residents walk paths that have been worn smooth by centuries of footfall, moving between the sheltered wood and the open, exposed heights above.
