It lies 2.8 miles north-west of Oxford (from Oxford: bearing 304°T, OS grid SP 475 087), and is situated west-south-west of Wolvercote village. The landscape here is defined by the expansive Wytham Woods SSSI, a vast, biological laboratory that stretches across the limestone ridge to temper the local climate. Beyond the domestic gardens, the terrain rises sharply toward The Mount, where the ground offers a sudden, sweeping perspective over the flat, water-meadows of the Thames. These meadows, often holding the silver-grey light of an overcast afternoon, contrast with the dense, brooding mass of the arboreal environment. History lingers in the proximity of Godstow Abbey, whose weathered ruins mark the eastern boundary with a heavy, monastic silence. Wytham itself remains remarkably coherent, its architecture appearing as if grown from the very bedrock rather than merely placed upon it. The air carries a distinct, damp clarity, moving between the heavy timber of the woods and the open, reed-choked margins of the river.
