Fields of low-lying pasture and ancient hedgerows define the quiet character of Kinton. It lies 8.0 miles south-east of Croesoswallt (from Croesoswallt: bearing 141°T, OS grid SJ 369 196), and is situated west-north-west of Nesscliffe village. The horizon here is marked by the sandstone rise of Nesscliffe Hill, where the weathered ramparts of a multivallate hillfort still command the view over the Shropshire plain. To the east, the curious, hollowed silhouette of Kynaston’s Cave peers out from the rock face, a site steeped in local folklore regarding the legendary highwayman Humphrey Kynaston. Kinton remains a place where the light catches the damp earth of the nearby Lin Can Moss, a small but vital sanctuary for rare wetland flora. The lanes surrounding Kinton are narrow and bordered by tall, unkempt verges that seem to hold the history of the land in their tangled roots. A deliberate stillness governs the atmosphere, interrupted only by the seasonal calls of birds moving between the woods and the water-logged meadows. The architecture here is modest, favouring brick and timber that have darkened to the colour of autumn bark under the persistent damp of the West Midlands weather.
