About Little Wenlock

Little Wenlock commands a position of singular quietude, sheltered by the high, brooding shoulder of the Shropshire hills. It lies 3.3 miles west-south-west of Telford (from Telford: bearing 250°T, OS grid SJ 646 068), and is situated south-west of New Works village. The land rises sharply here, where the earth seems to hold the cooling shadows of the past in the deep, verdant clefts of Devil’s Dingle. Stone cottages of local gritstone stand firm against the prevailing winds, their windows reflecting a sky that often feels wider and more restless than the one hanging over the nearby industrial plains. To the south, the slopes of Braggers Hill offer a vantage point from which the chimneys of the past have long since yielded to the encroaching bracken and sheep-grazed turf. Little Wenlock retains a sturdy, independent character, shaped by centuries of coal and limestone extraction that once scarred the landscape before nature reclaimed the pits and quarries. The air carries a crisp, mineral quality, sharpened by the proximity of the high ridges that define the horizon. Little Wenlock remains a place of deliberate pauses, where the passage of time is marked not by a clock, but by the shifting light across the weathered limestone walls.
