Llawnt occupies a quiet stretch of border country where the Shropshire hills begin their slow ascent toward the Welsh uplands. It lies 2.6 miles west-north-west of Croesoswallt (from Croesoswallt: bearing 285°T, OS grid SJ 249 309), and is situated south-south-west of Selattyn village. The land here holds a particular quality of light, thin and clear, which catches the ancient earthworks of Offa’s Dyke as they run in a jagged, grassy line just four hundred yards to the east. To the west, the slopes of Gallt-y-wrach rise sharply against the horizon, defining the edge of the basin that cradles the scattered houses. Beneath these heights, the fields follow the contours of the terrain with an irregular, stubborn grace that defies the straight lines of modern maps. Llawnt remains a place of deep lanes and high hedges, where the air feels scrubbed by the wind coming off the distant ridges. The presence of Baker's Hill nearby offers a vantage point from which the entire patchwork of stone and pasture seems to hold its breath. Here, the hum of the modern world fades, replaced by the persistent, low-frequency rustle of grass and the occasional call of a bird circling over the open fields.
