Twitchen marks a quiet fold in the Shropshire landscape, where the land rises in slow, deliberate swells that catch the low, honeyed light of late afternoon. It lies 4.6 miles west-south-west of Craven Arms (from Craven Arms: bearing 243°T, OS grid SO 367 793), and is situated south-south-west of Clunbury village. To the north-east, the slopes of Clunbury Hill rise with a spare, austere grace, casting long shadows that stretch toward the farmsteads below. A short distance to the west, the dense, tangled canopy of Purslow Wood holds the scent of damp earth and cooling bark, acting as a dark counterpoint to the open, wind-swept pastures. The presence of the rugged Hopton Castle Tower Keep, just south of Twitchen, serves as a stony reminder of a more turbulent past, its crumbling masonry softened now by encroaching lichen. Here, the rhythm of existence is dictated by the turning of the seasons and the shifting weather that rolls across the hills from the Welsh border.
