Bulford emerges from the quiet, verdant folds of the Somerset landscape as a cluster of homes defined by the slow pulse of the seasons. It lies 5.1 miles south-south-east of Taunton (from Taunton: bearing 146°T, OS grid ST 268 173), and is situated south-south-east of Staple Fitzpaine village. Ancient earthworks ripple across the higher ground to the south-south-east, where the remnants of the motte and bailey at Castle Neroche stand as silent witnesses to centuries of change. The light here seems to catch upon the damp, rich earth of the surrounding fields, illuminating a terrain that has long served the rhythms of pastoral life. To the east, the slopes of Abbey Hill rise to command the horizon, casting long, lean shadows over the pastures as the afternoon wanes. Bulford draws its character from this proximity to the wilder, wooded heights of the Neroche forest, where the air tastes perpetually of pine and cool, damp stone.
