About Bussex

Bussex emerges from the flat, expansive horizon of the Somerset Levels where the sky claims a vast and heavy portion of the view. It lies 3.7 miles east-south-east of Bridgwater (from Bridgwater: bearing 104°T, OS grid ST 354 354), and is situated north-north-east of Westonzoyland village. The land here remains stubbornly low, a monochromatic expanse that turns a bruised purple as the sun slips behind the distant hills. Only a few hundred yards to the north-west, the silence of the fields belies the violence of the Battle of Sedgemoor 1685, where the final pitched conflict on English soil left its mark upon the damp earth. Water dictates the rhythm of Bussex, with the nearby Sutton Drain acting as a grey, reflective ribbon that draws the light across the peat. These ancient drainage channels and the remnants of timber trackways remind the observer that this ground was once a treacherous, shifting marsh. The air in Bussex carries the sharp, clean scent of damp reeds and cooling mud, a reminder that the wild wetlands are never truly tamed. Even now, the horizon seems to press inward, forcing the eye to find comfort in the low-slung lines of the landscape.
