Coleford defines its own quiet borders across the limestone ridges of Somerset. It lies 3.6 miles south-south-east of Midsomer Norton (from Midsomer Norton: bearing 157°T, OS grid ST 686 487), and is situated north of Leigh upon Mendip village. The land here holds the heavy, metallic memory of its industrial youth, where coal once dictated the pulse of the earth. Fragments of the Coleford Aqueduct stand as stone skeletons near the water’s edge, overgrown and surrendered to the slow encroachment of moss. Sunlight catches the limestone walls of the old cottages, turning the grey masonry into a pale, bruised gold as the afternoon wanes. Much of the surrounding terrain remains part of the Edford Woods & Meadows SSSI, where the tangled thickets and damp ground preserve a wild, unbothered stillness. Coleford keeps its secrets in the deep hollows of the landscape, far from the frantic pace of the wider world. The air carries a sharp, clean chill, sharpened by the proximity of the Mendip hills rising against the western sky.
