About Combwich

Combwich occupies a low-lying reach of the Parrett estuary where the tidal mudflats reflect the shifting, bruised colours of the Somerset sky. It lies 4.1 miles north-west of Bridgwater (from Bridgwater: bearing 324°T, OS grid ST 258 423), and is situated east-south-east of Stockland Bristol village. The tides dictate the rhythm of the shoreline, pulling away to reveal expansive, slick channels that smell of salt and ancient, drying silt. To the south, the watercourses of Putnell Rhyne and New Close Rhyne act as quiet, vein-like arteries draining the surrounding marshland into the river. Combwich maintains a distinct maritime character, its harbour once serving as a vital landing point for the heavy stone and materials required for the construction of nearby power stations. Beyond the village, the elevated ground of the nearby Cynwit Castle remains as a silent, grassy sentinel over the flat expanse of the levels. The light here has a peculiar quality, sharpening the edges of the reeds and casting long, melancholic shadows across the flat fields as the sun dips toward the Bristol Channel. Combwich remains a place defined by the heavy, insistent pull of the sea and the patient, mud-drenched geography of the estuary.
