Green slopes rise with a sudden, quiet authority around the modest collection of dwellings that defines Cowbridge. It lies 2.4 miles south-south-west of Minehead (from Minehead: bearing 197°T, OS grid SS 956 425), and is situated north-north-east of Timberscombe village. The light here catches the damp limestone, casting long, sharp shadows that stretch toward the rising spine of Blackball Hill to the south-east. Because Cowbridge sits firmly within Exmoor National Park, the air feels sharpened by the proximity of high, open moorland and the brisk winds that scour the heights. To the north, the terrain dips into the sheltered, verdant hollow of Sloe Combe, where the vegetation grows thick and undisturbed by the passing of time. The landscape remains defined by its ancient, rugged boundaries, including the nearby Dunster Park And Heathlands SSSI, which guards the wilder character of the surrounding woods. Cowbridge persists as a place of low stone walls and muted colours, where the horizon is dominated by the weight of the hills rather than the ambitions of men.
