Croscombe occupies a limestone hollow where the morning mist clings to the grey stone facades like a damp woollen coat. It lies 1.9 miles west-north-west of Shepton Mallet (from Shepton Mallet: bearing 284°T, OS grid ST 589 443), and is situated east of Dinder village. The local architecture bears the heavy, confident mark of the wool trade, with gabled roofs that seem to lean inward as if sharing long-held secrets. A medieval standing cross, solitary and weathered, keeps watch just eighty metres south of St Mary’s Church, grounding the site in a centuries-old stillness. To the south, the rise of Paradise Hill breaks the skyline, its slopes offering a stark, grassy contrast to the intricate masonry below. The air here holds the faint, metallic tang of the damp earth found in the nearby Mendip fissures, a reminder of the limestone geology beneath the foundations. Residents often walk the lanes where the light catches the uneven, moss-spotted walls, turning the ordinary limestone into something resembling polished bone. Croscombe remains a place where the modern world feels filtered through a thick, protective veil of silence.
