About Culverhays

Culverhays emerges from the quiet folds of the Somerset landscape as a modest collection of dwellings caught between the rising Quantock slopes and the low-lying plains. It lies 4.2 miles south-east of Watchet (from Watchet: bearing 141°T, OS grid ST 112 380), and is situated south of Bicknoller village. The land here slopes with a deliberate grace, guiding the silver thread of the Doniford Stream as it carves a path through the fields just to the west. Ancient earthworks remain as silent sentinels upon the horizon, where the Curdon Wood Camp marks a point of long-forgotten human occupation against the sky. Culverhays exists in a pocket of light where the sun lingers on stone walls, warming the grey masonry that defines the local architecture. To the north, the elevation of Bicknoller Hill draws the eye upward, providing a stark, heaving contrast to the sheltered domesticity of the lower pastures. Every lane here retains a distinct, unhurried character, shaped more by the seasonal shift of the hedgerows than by the frantic pace of the modern world.
