Curland rests in a quiet corner of Somerset, a place where the land itself seems to sigh with contentment. It lies 8.4 km south-east of Taunton (from Taunton: bearing 140°T, OS grid ST 276 177), and is situated east-south-east of Staple Fitzpaine village. The hamlet unfolds across gently rolling terrain, where ancient hedgerows, thick with hawthorn and elder, speak of centuries of cultivation. Sunlight, when it breaks through the often-brooding Somerset sky, falls in broad, golden swathes across the fields, illuminating the deep green of pasture and the muted browns of tilled earth. Curland’s modest collection of dwellings, some of stone that has weathered the ages to a soft grey, others of brick that retains a warm, earthy hue, huddle together as if for comfort against the wider landscape. The air here carries the faint, sweet scent of damp soil and, on occasion, the distant bleating of sheep, a sound that seems to punctuate the silence rather than disturb it.
