East Water emerges from the high Mendip limestone as a quiet convergence of ancient earth and subterranean complexity. It lies 3.3 miles north-north-west of Wells (from Wells: bearing 347°T, OS grid ST 537 508), and is situated east of Priddy village. The landscape here is defined by the porous, hungry rock that drinks the rain, hiding the secrets of the Priddy Caves SSSi beneath the thin, windswept grass. East Water sits exposed to the shifting moods of the Atlantic weather, where the light often feels brittle and sharp against the grey stone walls. To the north, the rounded silhouettes of prehistoric burial mounds rise like dormant giants, marking a horizon that has looked much the same for millennia. A short distance away, the dark, still waters of the Mineries Pool hold the reflection of an industrial past, mirroring the ghosts of lead miners who once scoured these slopes for fortune. The air at East Water carries a persistent, clean chill, sharpened by the absence of trees and the constant, invisible pull of the earth towards the deep caverns below.
