About Little Moor

Little Moor emerges from the low-lying Somerset levels, a quiet fragment of land defined by the sky’s immense and shifting presence. It lies 2.4 miles east of North Petherton (from North Petherton: bearing 95°T, OS grid ST 326 325), and is situated west-north-west of Moorland village. Water dictates the temperament of the soil here, as the Northmoor Main Drain flows just 0.1 miles to the southeast, pulling the moisture from the heavy earth. The geography of Little Moor falls entirely within the North Moor SSSI, where the grasses seem to hold the light of the sun in a pale, persistent grip. A few paces to the east, the Westonzoyland Engine Rhyne cuts a sharp, dark line through the landscape, reflecting the clouds like a mirror cast into the reeds. The horizon here is vast and stripped of artifice, save for the distant, skeletal silhouette of the Saturn model from the Somerset Space Walk. Little Moor remains a place of damp, dark peat and wide, unshadowed air, where the wind carries the faint, metallic scent of the levels.
