Maundown rests where Somerset's green hills begin their slow descent towards the Bristol Channel. It lies 2.3 km west-north-west of Wiveliscombe (from Wiveliscombe: bearing 298°T, OS grid ST 060 289), and is situated west-south-west of Langley Marsh village. The air here often carries the clean scent of damp earth and distant livestock, a subtle perfume of rural life. The houses of Maundown, many of them stone-built with slate roofs, seem to huddle together against the prevailing winds, their windows reflecting the changing moods of the sky. A quiet brook, often no more than a murmur, threads its way through the hamlet, its passage marked by the occasional moss-covered stone bridge. The surrounding fields, divided by hedgerows that have stood for generations, are a patchwork of greens and golds, their colours deepening with the afternoon sun.
