Montacute, a jewel of Somerset, draws the eye with its gentle slopes and the soft, pale stone of its ancient buildings. It lies 6.0 km west of Yeovil (from Yeovil: bearing 280°T, OS grid ST 496 169), and is situated north-west of Odcombe village. The village’s very name whispers of its commanding position, a name possibly derived from 'Mons Acutus', the sharp hill upon which the historic Montacute Priory once stood. The light here, particularly in the late afternoon, seems to gather and linger, bathing the honey-coloured walls of Montacute House, a magnificent Tudor mansion, in a warm, almost burnished glow. The air carries the subtle scent of damp earth and distant hedgerows, a perfume of the West Country countryside. Even the village green, a generous expanse of emerald, feels alive underfoot, a place where time might well pause to catch its breath.
