About Oxenpill

Oxenpill emerges from the flat, peat-rich expanse of the Somerset Levels as a place defined by the slow, deliberate movement of water. It lies 3.6 miles west-north-west of Glastonbury (from Glastonbury: bearing 296°T, OS grid ST 447 415), and is situated west of Meare village. The horizon here is vast and low, where the sky presses down upon the earth with a weight that makes the reeds and sedge hum in the wind. Oxenpill occupies a portion of the Shapwick Heath SSSI, a landscape where the boundary between solid ground and marshland has always been a matter of negotiation. To the north-west, the remains of the Lake Villages serve as silent anchors to a prehistoric past, their presence felt beneath the modern turf. The light in this corner of the county possesses a singular, pearlescent quality, reflecting off the drainage rhynes to illuminate the underside of clouds with an amber glow. Nearby, the remnants of the ancient Sweet Track suggest a long history of human transit through this watery corridor. Oxenpill remains a quiet testament to an existence lived in close proximity to the tides and the shifting, fertile silts of the Avalon marshes.
