Porlockford rests where the land begins its gentle descent towards the Bristol Channel, a small cluster of dwellings breathing the salty air. It lies 10.2 km west of Minehead (from Minehead: bearing 276°T, OS grid SS 867 474), and is situated south-east of Porlock Weir village. Here, the fields, often a patchwork of deep greens and golds under the wide Somerset sky, meet the ancient, bracken-clad slopes that whisper tales of smugglers and forgotten tracks. The very air seems to carry a certain quietude, a sense of time flowing at a pace dictated by the ebb and flow of the nearby sea. A scattering of stone cottages, their roofs weathered by countless seasons, huddle together as if for company against the open expanse of Exmoor National Park, which looms protectively to the south. The stream that gives Porlockford its name, a lively ribbon of water after a good rain, chatters its way towards the coast, reflecting the ever-changing light that spills over the rolling hills.
