Rhode emerges from the quiet Somerset landscape as a cluster of habitations defined by the slow, deliberate pace of agricultural life. It lies 1.3 miles north-west of North Petherton (from North Petherton: bearing 322°T, OS grid ST 276 345), and is situated east of Goathurst village. The land here holds a particular stillness, where the low-lying fields drink in the damp morning air that drifts across from the nearby Millwood Stream. To the west, the expansive, historic grounds of Halswell Park provide a verdant backdrop, their ancient trees casting long shadows over the surrounding pasture. Rhode remains an intimate part of this patchwork of hedgerows and heavy, clay-rich earth, far removed from the clamour of busier transit routes. The light often settles thick and gold upon the lanes, illuminating the modest limestone masonry that characterises many of the older structures. Residents look toward the horizon where the silhouette of the Quantock Hills rises, providing a constant, geological anchor to the horizon. Every turn in the road around Rhode reveals how closely the residents live to the rhythms of the water-meadows and the shifting, seasonal moods of the Somerset sky.
