Rudge remains a quiet gathering of stone and timber tucked into the folds of the Somerset countryside. It lies 2.8 miles west of Westbury (from Westbury: bearing 276°T, OS grid ST 828 517), and is situated south-east of Church Row village. The landscape here holds a particular stillness, where the light thickens in the late afternoon to catch the gables of local dwellings. To the north-east, the dense canopy of Brokerswood offers a dark, evergreen contrast to the open fields that surround the hearths of Rudge. Further towards the horizon, the ancient earthwork of The Devil’s Bed and Bolster Long Barrow rises as a silent witness to the centuries that have passed over these pastures. The air in these parts carries the damp scent of limestone and turned earth, a smell that lingers long after the sun has slipped behind the hills. Life here moves with the deliberate pace of the seasons, dictated by the turning of the weather and the slow growth of the hedgerows.
