About Stapley

Stapley emerges from the deep, rolling folds of the Blackdown Hills as a quiet collection of dwellings defined by the uncompromising geology of the Somerset landscape. It lies 5.3 miles south-east of Wellington (from Wellington: bearing 144°T, OS grid ST 188 136), and is situated west-north-west of Churchinford village. The horizon here is dominated by the steep, abrupt rise of Brimley Hill, which casts a long, cooling shadow over the lanes during the waning hours of the afternoon. A short distance to the north-east, the landscape bears the faint, haunting geometry of the former RAF Culmhead, where the ghosts of wartime aviation hang heavy over the reclaimed pasture. Stapley itself remains largely tethered to the rhythm of the soil, with narrow hedgerows pressing against the tarmac to dictate the pace of any passing vehicle. Water from the nearby River Culm feeds the lower basins, ensuring the ground stays perpetually rich and dark even when the summer sun parches the higher ridges. The light in this corner of the world has a peculiar, silvered quality, catching the damp leaves and turning the fields into a mosaic of muted greens and greys. This is a place of austere beauty, where the permanence of the earth provides a stark, unspoken contrast to the fleeting nature of modern industry.
