Toulton emerges from the quiet Somerset landscape as a cluster of stone and slate held firmly in the grip of the Quantock Hills. It lies 4.7 miles north-north-west of Taunton (from Taunton: bearing 333°T, OS grid ST 190 312), and is situated north-east of Bishops Lydeard village. The light here seems to thicken in the evenings, catching the sharp edges of ancient boundaries and the weathered texture of local masonry. To the north, the elevation rises toward the slopes of Cothelstone Hill, where the air grows thin and carries the scent of bracken and exposed earth. A brief walk from the houses leads toward the historic grounds of Cothelstone Manor, where the trees stand with a deliberate, aristocratic stillness. The surrounding fields are defined by a rigorous geometry of hedges, marking out a terrain that has been worked by hand for generations. Beyond the immediate periphery, the dense canopy of Buncombe Wood provides a dark, verdant counterpoint to the open grazing land. Toulton maintains a private composure, indifferent to the busier routes that pull traffic toward the coast or the inland market centres.
