About Withypool

Withypool rests where the River Barle carves a cool, silver vein through the high, heather-bruised expanse of Exmoor National Park. It lies 6.3 miles north-west of Dulverton (from Dulverton: bearing 316°T, OS grid SS 844 353), and is situated south-south-west of Exford village. The light here has a peculiar clarity, catching the grey stone of the cottages and the deep, mossy hollows of the surrounding moorland. To the south-south-west, the ancient stones of the Withypool Hill circle remain as silent witnesses to those who walked these ridges millennia ago. The landscape rises sharply towards South Hill, where the wind carries the scent of damp peat and gorse across the open common. Below the village, the water of the Barle runs over stones polished by time, creating a low, rhythmic murmur that defines the silence of the valley. Withypool retains the quiet gravity of a place that has long watched the seasons bleed into one another across the open sky. Visitors often find the air here thin and sharp, tasting of the Atlantic gales that scour the high ground.
