About Catshaw

Catshaw emerges from the rolling Pennine fringe as a quiet collection of stone dwellings held fast against the prevailing westerly winds. It lies 2.3 miles west of Penistone (from Penistone: bearing 269°T, OS grid SE 208 032), and is situated west of Millhouse Green village. The landscape surrounding Catshaw is defined by a rugged, open elevation where the sky seems to press closer to the earth, claiming the horizon with an expansive, grey-blue authority. A short walk to the north-north-west brings one to the weathered remains of the boundary and wayside cross, a silent sentinel of gritstone that has observed the passage of travellers for centuries. Below the slopes, the landscape drains into the humble, persistent flow of Flash House Dike, which carves its path through the lower pastures with a rhythmic, gurgling urgency. To the west, the dark profile of Sledbrook Hill dominates the skyline, its heather-clad flanks absorbing the shifting light of the afternoon. This terrain, shaped by ancient geological patience, offers little shelter but rewards the observer with a profound sense of solitude. Catshaw remains a place of austere beauty, where the stone of the buildings mirrors the stubborn character of the surrounding moorland.
