About Moorend

Moorend commands a rugged elevation where the wind scours the stone walls of the Staffordshire Moorlands, leaving the grass clipped short by the elements. It lies 4.9 miles north-east of Cheadle (from Cheadle: bearing 44°T, OS grid SK 065 486), and is situated north-west of Hoften's Cross village. The light here has a sharp, thin quality, falling across the limestone outcrops and the broken ground of the nearby Caldon Low SSSI with a cold, pale clarity. Moorend exists as a cluster of grey-faced dwellings that seem to have grown directly from the gritstone beneath them. To the south, the valley of Cotton Dell cuts a deep, verdant scar into the earth, contrasting with the exposed, wind-battered heights of the hamlet. Time feels held in the heavy, circular earthworks of the Ribden Low Bowl Barrow, which stands as a silent sentinel over the agricultural toil of the surrounding fields. The local landscape remains defined by the persistence of its geology, where the earth hides industrial memories beneath a thin veneer of pasture. Every lane in Moorend traces the contours of a difficult, beautiful terrain that demands much from those who walk its paths.
