It lies 7.0 miles north-west of Ashbourne (from Ashbourne: bearing 319°T, OS grid SK 106 552), and is situated east-north-east of Grindon village. To the west, the jagged mouth of Thor’s Cave looms over the Manifold Valley, a dark, hollow eye watching the slow passage of clouds across the moor.
