Dial Post emerges from the West Sussex clay as a quiet confluence of lanes where the horizon holds a heavy, expectant stillness. It lies 5.3 miles north-north-west of Steyning (from Steyning: bearing 347°T, OS grid TQ 154 195), and is situated south-west of West Grinstead village. Low-hanging clouds frequently brush the tops of the nearby oaks, casting long, bruised shadows across the damp verges that define the local topography. To the north, the River Adur threads its way through the landscape, a thin, silver vein that drains the surrounding fields with a sluggish, persistent gravity.
