Didling remains a quiet fold in the landscape where the chalk of the South Downs catches the low, pale light of the waning afternoon. It lies 3.4 miles west-south-west of Midhurst (from Midhurst: bearing 240°T, OS grid SU 837 186), and is situated west-north-west of Bepton village. This hamlet occupies a sheltered position within the South Downs National Park, where the land rises sharply towards the ancient, grass-tufted crests of Didling Hill. To the south, the horizon is marked by the Bowl Barrow On Didling Hill, a silent, earthen curve that has held its shape against the wind for centuries. The surrounding slopes are part of the Treyford To Bepton Down Sssi, a chalk grassland where the air tastes of crushed thyme and flint. Below the heights, the ground softens into pastures that seem to hold the stillness of the seasons in their long, unshadowed grass. Didling preserves a sense of seclusion that defies the encroachment of the wider world, remaining tethered to the slow pulse of the turning year.
