Greatham holds a quiet, austere presence within the flat, marshy expanse of the Arun Valley. It lies 5.4 miles south-east of Petworth (from Petworth: bearing 132°T, OS grid TQ 043 158), and is situated east of Coldwaltham village. The horizon here is dominated by the expansive South Downs National Park, where the chalk hills rise to catch the pale, shifting light of the Sussex sky. To the west, the ancient stone arches of Greatham Bridge span the river, their weathered surfaces recording the slow, persistent passage of the water beneath. Much of the land surrounding Greatham falls within the Amberley Wild Brooks SSSI, a sodden, reed-choked basin that breathes with the rhythmic arrival of migratory birds. The damp earth here remains heavy and dark, clinging to the boots of those who cross the meadows in the grey hours of the morning. Greatham remains defined by this low-lying water, a landscape that keeps its own counsel against the encroaching dry ground of the higher ridges.
