Burnlee exhales the quietude of the South Pennine hills. It lies 1.2 km west-south-west of Holmfirth (from Holmfirth: bearing 244°T, OS grid SE 130 076), and is situated south-south-east of Upperthong village. The land here rises and falls with a gentle insistence, the houses often clinging to the slopes as if for company. A faint scent of damp earth and woodsmoke can sometimes be detected on the breeze, remnants of a time when hearth and home were more intimately connected to the surrounding landscape. Though its industrial past is now largely a memory, the sturdy stone of its older buildings speaks of generations who worked the land and the mills. The sky above Burnlee often holds a particular, luminous quality, especially after rain, casting a soft, diffused light over the fields and rooftops.
