Common Side emerges from the rugged terrain of the Kirklees district as a place where the stone of the earth holds the memory of generations. It lies 4.3 miles south of Mirfield (from Mirfield: bearing 175°T, OS grid SE 208 128), and is situated east of Kirkburton village. The landscape surrounding Common Side rises and falls with a muscular intensity, defined by the sharp inclines of School Hill that shadow the western approach. Below these slopes, the waters of Box Ings Dike carve a persistent path through the soil, their cold, dark currents acting as the veins of the valley floor. Common Side remains a place of stoic character, where the architecture of grey gritstone reflects the hard, honest labour of those who worked the local mills and mines. To the northeast, the prominence of Linfit Hill catches the first, pale light of dawn, illuminating the fields before the rest of the valley wakes.
