About Golcar

Golcar rises from the western slopes, a place where the Yorkshire sky feels vast and close. It lies 4.9 km west of Huddersfield (from Huddersfield: bearing 264°T, OS grid SE 096 159), and is situated north of Lower Wellhouse village. The houses of Golcar, many built from the local stone, seem to climb the hillside, their roofs catching the often-grey light of the region. The air here carries the faint, earthy scent of moorland, a reminder of the open land that surrounds this former weaving settlement. Streets curve with the contours of the land, and from some vantage points, one can see the distant, chequered patterns of fields stretching towards the horizon. The rhythm of Golcar, though quieter now than in its industrial heyday, still echoes with the industry that once shaped it.
