Greetland occupies the steep, stubborn inclines of the Calder Valley, where the stone buildings seem to emerge directly from the gritstone beneath them. It lies 1.4 miles west of Elland (from Elland: bearing 280°T, OS grid SE 086 213), and is situated north of Holywell Green village. The light here catches the high, sloping streets during the late afternoon, casting long shadows that accentuate the rugged character of the local architecture. To the northeast, the dense canopy of North Dean Wood offers a stark, arboreal contrast to the grey industrial remnants that once defined the region’s prosperity. Greetland retains a certain quiet gravity, its older dwellings built to withstand the biting winds that sweep down from the surrounding uplands.
