Middleton occupies a verdant rise above the Wharfe, defined by the steady, northward climb toward the rugged moorland fringe. It lies 1.1 miles north-north-east of Ilkley (from Ilkley: bearing 25°T, OS grid SE 124 491). To the north, the steep, shadowed cleft of Bow Beck Gill cuts through the land, channelling the runoff from the high plateaus into the valley below. These slopes and pastures retain a distinct, sequestered character, separated from the brisk commerce of the valley floor by the rise of the terrain.
