Sawood breathes the quietude of West Yorkshire’s undulating terrain. It lies 7.4 km south of Keighley (from Keighley: bearing 189°T, OS grid SE 048 339), and is situated east-south-east of Oxenhope village. The air here, especially when the sun dips low, carries a faint, earthy scent, reminiscent of peat and damp stone. The scattered dwellings of Sawood, some of them ancient farmsteads, seem to grow organically from the land itself, their grey stone walls absorbing the muted colours of the surrounding moors. A small, almost furtive stream, no more than a whisper of water, winds its way through the landscape, its passage marked by a subtle, persistent murmur. The sky above Sawood is often vast and changeable, capable of holding a fierce, brooding grey or a luminous, expansive blue that stretches to the furthest horizon.
